A guide to asking about careKeep your questions

Plan the conversation

Question list: ask for a clear answer.

Pick the questions that matter most to you. Ask for a plain answer before moving on. Keep the wording simple enough to read aloud.

Ask what is being considered, and why

Start with the proposal itself. A clear name and a clear reason make the rest easier to discuss.

  • What is the medicine's exact name? Is it an injection or a tablet?
  • How does that choice fit my reason for asking about care?
  • What other options fit that goal?
  • If this is made to order, what change is being made and why does it matter for me?

Ask what happens after the visit

The medical boards' guidance requires a way for patients to ask the clinician their own questions once the visit is over.

  • Who can answer a medicine question, and how do I reach them?
  • What would make us review the plan?
  • What would further visits, tests, and medicine cost?
  • What happens if I decide against medicine or stop using this service?
  • Can I have the plan and the charges in writing?
